Are our City Councillors about to “dish-out” more density indigestion in an Upper Lonsdale neighbourhood that is overwhelmingly against this development?… A project that can only be served with a spéciale du jour Harry Jerome “Mega SportsPlex” attached to its meaty hip bone!

This coming Monday Night’s City Council HJ Public Hearing Fight Card will be like no other. In one corner you have the ENTIRE city council wanting massive density dropped on the existing Harry Jerome Lands on different density high-rise levels while demanding of course (it is an election year) some kind of $90K salaried unaffordable low income housing to the type of commercial offices & medical research/services they will want incorporated into our city owned leased lands.

And this can only happen IF Mussatto’s Team Bandits a-line themselves with Independent Team Councillors Bell, Clark and Bookham – “double teaming” – brawling for a monster pool and curling rinks SportsPlex.  And in the later rounds asphyxiating traffic gridlock and putting a chokehold on if you can find it parking in a one-sided demolition massacre of the Harry Jerome Lands and Neighbourhood!

Add to that ALL the outside interference from on-lookers who do not live in this community and the many Olympic pool sized lovers and curling enthusiasts from the District and West Van City…  Does this sound like a fair fight to you?

The only ace Harry Jerome residents have up their sleeve is “reminding city councillors” how they plan to mark their Election Night’s Fight Card if these projects move forward…  Reminding them: “other North Shore city residents favouring a new Titanic HJ SportsPlex don’t get to vote, re-elect any city councillor or get to elect a wannabe running for mayor.”

Will this be the final feather in their albatross caps, having disenfranchised so many neighbourhoods since being elected in late 2014… we’ll know in just 127 days.  #Vote4ChangeOct20

We can ALL count on one hand the number of cyclists using our costly Black Necklace bike lanes during most of our cold, snowy at times and very rainy winter months. Cyclists choosing to get back into their vehicles further congesting our traffic lanes or further overcrowding our buses!

We may not have a winter storm bomb overhead but we will be experiencing many bombastic interventions not only from developers getting their last density projects across the finish line further exceeding our already over capacity transportation modes before our next civic election.  But also from minimalist special interest groups whom have a chokehold on our complacent city council like HUB.

A cycling organization who are seemingly defiant and determined to give cyclists reign over our motoring congested traffic flows.  Unwilling to compromise, unwilling to accept the overwhelming stats from other cities across our country and in Europe witnessing a reduction in cycling or the negative impact of bike lanes in front of businesses, declaring them falsehoods – fake news like:  The Province’s columnist Lawrence Solomon http://theprovince.com/opinion/op-ed/lawrence-solomon-rip-out-the-bike-lanes-before-more-people-get-hurt

I am for cycling but not ever at the $20+ million expense of our dire gridlocked roadways.  And with ONLY 2.5% of city residents willing to cycle to work further reinforces the argument  that yes, in our city cycling is simply and ONLY a great summery recreation sport weather permitting – period!  And even through the rumour mill I am hearing NSMBA membership is on the decline… cyclists confronted with an inconvenient (gentrified) reality as more and more young families can no longer afford our North Shore.
