First I want to thank all those who wanted to support my run for city councillor. This was by no means an easy decision, triggered by June 18’s underhanded Harry Jerome Lands Rezoning Public Hearing and then the unconscionable audacity of Darwin/Collier Realty to release “in print’ the knowledge that Harry Jerome Lands behind Harry Jerome Neighbourhood resident’s back is a foregone conclusion!
The 8 to 9 years needed to construct these premeditated faulty towers and annihilation of the existing Harry Jerome Lands is the straw that broke my camel’s back. I will not spend a decade in a convoluting “destroy and build” city council SELLOUT CONSTRUCTION ZONE!
Moving on… We are only “101 days or 14 weeks + 3 days” away from electing a new mayor & hopefully six “new” neighbourly city councillors. Currently we have two insiders and 1 1/2 outsiders, Guy Heywood having served previously on the 2009 city council running for mayor… Curious, does anyone know what happened to Heywood’s drummed-up NVCAA regime? Their website is MIA.
With 4 candidates running for mayor maybe we’ll begin to read and hear a little “pre-season” mayoral race trash talk along with fireworks turfing and boasting on who is best suited to be our new leader. Wouldn’t it be nice if these four familiar contenders inspired others to run for mayor. Mayoral candidates bringing a breath of fresh air in social & economic perspectives. Especially after being held hostage for 4 long years by a city council that is developer compliant and anti NIMBY! But running for mayor ain’t cheap, same goes running for city councillor!
I left out pro-amalgamation George Pringle who has not officially thrown-in his hat into the mayor’s ring. In the last election he received around 300 votes. But it would be interesting in having two amalgamation candidates running and see who would get the majority of the CNV “307” who voted in favour i.e. twinning of our North Shore cities from the recent farcical District/NRG reunification survey.
In our upcoming election with limited mayoral spending limits and donor restrictions, don’t be surprised if at least one of our contender’s legitimacy is impaired by their campaign disingenuous endeavours. Much like Guy Heywood noted & presented at a March 2015 city council meeting… https://nvcityvoices.wordpress.com/2015/page/14/
Let the mayoral war games begin!
Tonight is all about proposing once again changes to our toothless OCP bylaws and of course “amending zoning bylaws” to accommodate the inane density madness proposed for the HJ Neighbourhood Lands.
The amount of density pollution, traffic & parking chaos this community will have to endure for at least eight long years should be criminal at best. But try telling that to Mussatto’s Team backers “indebted” to their 2014 campaign investor Darwin Construction… or try telling that to city councillors who want to devastate a community in the name of Olympic swimmers and curlers MOST whom do not live in our city! #UpperLonsdaleSOL
Should we not expect as in like always, Harry Jerome resident voices to be heard then overruled by the end of tonight’s Public Hearing.
If there was ever a double dealing reason, need to bring down our city council on October 20th – this is it… Unless common sense prevails and a majority of Councillors decide to put these ‘can’t have one without the other’ projects on a back burner to be served up later by the yet to be elected new city council. #Vote4ChangeOct20
Unfortunately there’s too much horse trading willingness on both sides not to expect a fatal devastating blow to the HJ community… If there was ever a time to believe in 5 act play.
A contentious night it will surely be… giddy up!
The intent of my editorial cartoon blog is to bring awareness i.e. getting citizens more engaged in local city politics. Of course not everyone will agree with my POV in just how convoluting, disconnected and polarized our city politics has sorely succumbed under our mayor’s “4 to 3” Team Slate and by our other remaining city Councillor’s horse trading practices. City Hall is no longer “the voice of the people, rather the compliant bought and paid voice of our mayor’s donor pals.”
Our city has now surpassed 2041 Regional Growth Strategy Targets, leaving us choking in traffic/transit congestion and shrinking street parking. The welfare of CNV is under siege by “vulture developers and undermined by poor city planning.” Making it impossible for many seniors, artists, low and fixed income earners and Millennial families to afford our gentrifying housing agenda. A city “short changing” our local businesses who can’t find/keep quantitative part-time workers because of our high cost of rental housing. But we do have $25 million Black Chain bike lanes connecting our four Green Necklace Parks used by less than 2% willing to cycle daily to work!
