A majority of our “we know what is best sanctimonious City Councillors” once again do not and will not support the majority of residents AGAINST any proposed project regardless of its scope in either its front or backyard.
Monday Night’s Public Hearing fiasco lived up to this city council’s over-righteousness and in turn favoured for the good of their legacies and North Shore residents AHEAD of the concerns of the neighbourhood most effected by these en masse dueling developments that should NEVER HAVE BEEN INTERTWINED; but that is not how our sitting council likes to mandate its underhanded, inane 21st Century horse trading agendum. #HarryJeromeResidentsSOL
And don’t get too worked up over the fact wannabe mayor Buchanan, councillor Keating and the mayor voted against the unprecedented 32 storey HJ rezoning. Their reasons for nay-ing did not ever once cite the fact that a 1,000+ submitted petition against these projects was ever a good enough, valid reason to vote against. (more in Friday’s blog)
But at least now you know which councillors over its four year term haven’t been supporting community concerns regarding too much density or the wrong kind of density… EVERY MEMBER of our city council is now on record in having STOPPED LISTENING to too many city residents!
On October 20th “let’s not get fooled again”… play/skip to the very end.
Tonight is all about proposing once again changes to our toothless OCP bylaws and of course “amending zoning bylaws” to accommodate the inane density madness proposed for the HJ Neighbourhood Lands.
The amount of density pollution, traffic & parking chaos this community will have to endure for at least eight long years should be criminal at best. But try telling that to Mussatto’s Team backers “indebted” to their 2014 campaign investor Darwin Construction… or try telling that to city councillors who want to devastate a community in the name of Olympic swimmers and curlers MOST whom do not live in our city! #UpperLonsdaleSOL
Should we not expect as in like always, Harry Jerome resident voices to be heard then overruled by the end of tonight’s Public Hearing.
If there was ever a double dealing reason, need to bring down our city council on October 20th – this is it… Unless common sense prevails and a majority of Councillors decide to put these ‘can’t have one without the other’ projects on a back burner to be served up later by the yet to be elected new city council. #Vote4ChangeOct20
Unfortunately there’s too much horse trading willingness on both sides not to expect a fatal devastating blow to the HJ community… If there was ever a time to believe in 5 act play.

This coming Monday Night’s City Council HJ Public Hearing Fight Card will be like no other. In one corner you have the ENTIRE city council wanting massive density dropped on the existing Harry Jerome Lands on different density high-rise levels while demanding of course (it is an election year) some kind of $90K salaried unaffordable low income housing to the type of commercial offices & medical research/services they will want incorporated into our city owned leased lands.
And this can only happen IF Mussatto’s Team Bandits a-line themselves with Independent Team Councillors Bell, Clark and Bookham – “double teaming” – brawling for a monster pool and curling rinks SportsPlex. And in the later rounds asphyxiating traffic gridlock and putting a chokehold on if you can find it parking in a one-sided demolition massacre of the Harry Jerome Lands and Neighbourhood!
Add to that ALL the outside interference from on-lookers who do not live in this community and the many Olympic pool sized lovers and curling enthusiasts from the District and West Van City… Does this sound like a fair fight to you?
The only ace Harry Jerome residents have up their sleeve is “reminding city councillors” how they plan to mark their Election Night’s Fight Card if these projects move forward… Reminding them: “other North Shore city residents favouring a new Titanic HJ SportsPlex don’t get to vote, re-elect any city councillor or get to elect a wannabe running for mayor.”
Will this be the final feather in their albatross caps, having disenfranchised so many neighbourhoods since being elected in late 2014… we’ll know in just 127 days. #Vote4ChangeOct20
With Councillors Bell, Bookham and Clark on board for the en masse towering of the proposed HJ Lands Darwin Lands in order to finance their $200+ million
Rogers Harry Jerome Coliseum. We now have ALL city councillors and the mayor in unison caroling “where else can we put density!” Gone are the days of these three city councillors supporting NIMBY’s in their quest for less density. ‘Cause you see folks “community density trumps hypocrisy!” #EnoughBullCrap
In fact these turncoat city councillors are more than ready to help the mayor’s double dipping 2014 campaign investors Darwin Properties deconstruct two blocks of a neighbourhood for eight long years! Having seemingly turned their backs on an entire neighbourhood community.
Outside of perhaps city councillor Keating feeling pressure from this his neighbourhood – it looks like a done deal on a scale not yet carved in stone. There is an apparent nonsensical haste by Councillors Bell, Bookham and Clark (along with councillor Back & wannabe mayor Buchanan) to ramrod these two joined at the hips whoring projects through before the next election in 135 days/19 weeks.
I believe a “majority” of Upper Lonsdale residents will be drawing a line in the sand at “both ends” of the existing Harry Jerome Lands. If these two farcical developments come to fruition via our sitting council, there should be an en masse “demo-vote-eviction” of these city councillors on October 20th. #LestWeForget #ElectionPayBack
We need city councillors to support and prioritize each community’s “unique” social concerns and interests before any: for the glory of the North Shore drivel. #EnoughDensity!
Alas my worst low income housing fears are coming to fruition when you have Vancouver City and their city planners resolving their low income housing crisis by building WTH: “for profit affordable rental housing”.
And profits there will certainly be: a walk-in closet size studio’s will go for $1,385 a month. A little one bedroom is $1,638 a month, a ’70’s sized one bedroom is now a two bedroom for only $2,459 a month and a three-bedroom cookie cutter is only WTF: $3,109! Welcome to the Vancouver’s new low income family affordable unaffordable rental housing.
And of course CNV is mirroring Vancouver’s low rental hypocrisy with our current asinine new rental project base criteria 10/10/10: 10% of units at 10% under market value and for only 10 years! Full market rental rates which will exceed the aforementioned “for profit affordable rental housing” when our new “mortgage rate” rental developments come to market in 2019/20. #cnvSOL
But what is really worrying-some in our little enclave density compacted city is: there is virtually NO LAND LEFT to construct low affordable housing. And thus any Provincial and/or Federal grant financial assistance for “real affordable” low income housing can never be realized!
…Unless instead of building a new damn Mega Sportsplex we reserve portions of these newfound lands for future Federal/Provincial subsidized low income housing. Thus saving Norseman Park, lawn bowling greens, tennis courts, Silver Harbour Seniors Centre and renovating our existing Harry Jerome, i.e. sparing them from Darwin’s guillotine: a Mussatto double dipping campaign donor. #noMoreDensity
And for the record a Harry Jerome renovation is realistically possible, much like we have witnessed throughout our city as developer after developer has been demolishing blocks of “50 to 60 year old walk-up apartment buildings” – replacing them with larger more energy efficient rental housing. It is really that easy and cost effective.
But sadly we have a majority of city councillors who want to take away the “integrity” of our Harry Jerome “community recreational centre” and turn it into a farcical Sports Paradise by the only means available… “DEVASTATING” an entire neighbourhood for 8 YEARS! #lestWeForgetOctober20
Mayor Mussatto has stated: “Where else can we put the density”. Have we not lost enough green space and horizon views because of your over development. And now city planners want to amend height and land use zoning bylaws in an area of our city deemed off limits to towering high rises. Allowing a 28 storey residential tower north of 17th will be a “developer’s welcoming precedent” and once set will lead to even MORE towering high rises north of 17th!
All because of a too big for its britches swimming hole; a new Harry Jerome Centre that can only be realized by way of a looming EIGHT YEAR high rise development by Mussatto’s double dipping donor Darwin Properties. That’s EIGHT YEARS of ongoing intrusive density, air & noise pollution’s! Any city councillor casting a yea vote to construct these joined at the hip cash-strapped projects may find a hovering albatross overhead, a Herculean deconstruct in not getting re-elected in 145 days.
In other sly news, Friday’s NSN aka “District ★ Trojan Crier” reported on a city council agenda item “cannabis report update” they had to have received last Wednesday or Thursday. Well before our City Clerk decides to let “it’s residents” have any insight into Monday’s city council agenda. An agenda never posted until late Friday morning with the full agenda package not showing up if we’re lucky just before or after TGIF lunch. An agenda on the sly for two weeks as last Monday was a stat holiday.
